FAME Week Africa set the Cape Town International Convention Centre aflame with its bold energy and creative ambience this September. The theme of this annual event was “Tell it Bold, Tell it African”, as the event celebrated Africa’s dynamic creative industries, including film, television, music, animation, fashion, and entertainment technology. The six-day gathering provided a powerful platform for African creatives to showcase their stories, talents, and cultures to the world.

As a corporate social investment and media partner, Cape Town TV proudly participated in FAME Week Africa with a stall at the event. Station Manager Karen Thorne led the delegation and some of the channel’s producers were also present with Tatum Ludolph from City Living and and Yonela Masumpa from Homegrown. These shows helped to promote the event while highlighting its significance to local creators and audiences.
“Cape Town TV has partnered with FAME Week for two consecutive years,” says Thorne. “The event has proven to be a valuable space to engage with local producers and advocate for the role of community television within the broader broadcasting ecosystem.”
Unlike mainstream broadcasters, Cape Town TV does not commission content. Instead, it offers a unique benefit: independent producers can submit com
pleted content for broadcast and in return, receive viewership statistics from the channel to help them to find sponsors for their content. Depending on the show’s appeal, these numbers can be significant by helping producers to monetize and build credibility for their work.
One of the key initiatives Cape Town TV promotes during FAME Week is its Producer Development Programme. This initiative supports emerging producers who may not have the resources to bring their concepts to life. Through this programme, selected participants are invited to attend a workshop and are taken through the fundamentals of television production while being supported in developing their own pilot series.
FAME Week offers an excellent opportunity to share this information with the wider TV industry. It’s particularly beneficial for young, up-and-coming producers who haven’t yet been commissioned, giving them a pathway to create and broadcast their content. Given the high demand for fresh local programming, this opportunity is invaluable.
The event also enables Cape Town TV to connect with other broadcasters and explore potential content sales, co-productions, and platform expansion. Engagements with government and industry stakeholders further support the station’s goal of strengthening its presence and extending its availability across additional platforms.
“FAME Week is not only about visibility — it’s about building real opportunities for content creators in our community” adds Thorne.
