Meet the OUR CITY news team
Nobesuthu Beya
I currently head up the production department at CTV, overseeing all the station’s in-house programmes. I obtained a National Certificate in Versatile Broadcasting in 2011 and a National Diploma in Journalism in 2014. After graduating I joined Cape Town TV as an intern working under the supervision of a renowned current affairs producer Lydia Plaaitjies on a programme called Our City.I climbed through the ranks and was appointed the Producer of Our City in 2016 and in 2017 I was appointed Head of News overseeing a team of ten journalists and camera operators. I was also fortunate to be selected to take part in a multimedia documentary created as the result of a workshop program held by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation South Africa and JournAfrica!

I have worked in community media for five years and fell in love with the field “as soon as I laid eyes on it”, pre-university. In community media our programming has an impact on people, provides an alternative voice on the national discourse and grants access to those were previously excluded from the media.

Siphiwo Nkonki
I hold B.Tech in Journalism obtained from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. I joined Cape Town TV in 2014 as an intern. Prior to that, I worked for Stellenbosch Municipality, the Herald Newspaper and News24. I now produce Our City News. I love community media.

Bongani Tulani
I’m 28 years old and I’m employed at CTV as a camera operator and editor. The organisation has various successful productions and for me it has played a good role in sending me into the field as a camera operator. I’m very happy and proud to work here.

Bulelelani Dyomfana
I’m a 25-year-old third-year student, currently enrolled for a National Diploma in Journalism at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.I’m at the stage of my studies where I’m doing an internship at Cape Town TV’s news department. I chose Cape Town TV because my career aspirations are mostly geared towards broadcast-journalism and the station presents a lot of opportunities to learn and hone my skills In various areas within the field.

Suffice to say that it has been a learning experience and that my favourite part is being able to able to connect and empathise with people’s stories.

Busiswa Mahonono
I am a 23-year-old third year student in journalism, doing my internship in Cape Town TV in Our City News. I love reading – anything from community news papers to international gossip news. Reading is important for your mind and sometimes your sanity.News is important to me for obvious reasons like staying informed but also for being passionate about the issues that affect you. As someone who was born and raised in the Cape Flats I feel there are a lot of voices that are still unheard concerning the reality of daily life in the area and those are the stories that I care about.

Our City News gives me the opportunity to merge my passion with hard work so we can produce stories that people care about.

Byron Lukas
I’m a 24-year-old journalist from Tafelsig, which is one of the dangerous areas in Mitchell’s plain. Cape Town TV has given me the platform to develop my skills as a young journalist in the industry, from reporting on various issues in the province to helping people find solutions, so I would say I’ve become the mouthpiece for people who are struggling to get their story heard.Working at Cape Town TV is fun, every day you learn different things about yourself, your colleagues and the people you encounter whether it’s a politician or just some average Joe. So my advice for young people who are looking to make a breakthrough in the media, CTV will definitely help you lay the foundation.

Edna Cangolo
I am 26 years of age and I work as the news anchor, journalist and assistant bulletin editor for the news. I started working at Cape Town TV in 2017 as an intern and when I came here I had almost no knowledge of media production because at school our focus was always on theory and not practical. Working at CTV has taught me so much about media production and journalism.I love working at CTV because it’s all about the community and working at the channel these past years has allowed me do stories on people who felt less important and that they didn’t have a voice but we can give them that voice through CTV. I eat news, I breathe news and I am passionate about my work.

Jamie Lee Esau
I am 25 years old and currently reside in Athlone. My journey at Cape Town TV started when I applied for the Film and Television learnership in May 2018. Here I learnt everything I needed to know about television, from how to operate a camera to mixing sound to being a floor manager.I started to like being a camera operator more than any other role in the studio – then I decided to move to the news department. Here I found my place. I go out with journalists to cover the people’s stories. I also learnt to edit my footage with the help of the professional editors here. When I started with the learnership I had no idea that this field would be so much fun and that I would learn something new every day.
